Patriotic Throught and Through

With the 4th of July on a Sunday this year I couldn't resist but to make some patriotic church clothes. For those of you interested, the tutorial for Paige's ruffle flag shirt is here. You can download the pattern for her sash here. The boys tie pattern was purchased here and can be instantly downloaded. For those of you with basic sewing skills the tie was a pretty simple project. I was pleasantly surprised how quick a project it was and how nice the finished product is. I'm already dreaming of the next holiday I can make ties for.

Fabirc Flowers

One of my new favorite projects are fabric flowers. They are super easy with minimal sewing. There are a million tutorials on the Internet. The pattern that I used for the bottom picture is found here. For the top picture I embroidered a simple design onto felt and then attached the different layers together. My next project is a new tote for myself and I'm planning a huge flower on the front.

Bright Shabby Chic

For this blanket we wanted to use the same style as the shabby chic blanket but with a brighter pink and green. I found this collection of fabrics by Moda and loved the variety of designs while staying in the same colors. My favorite fabric is the fourth one from the bottom... if you look closely it is of peacocks. Not your typical baby blanket but I thought that it worked with this design.

There have been so many boys born lately that I was excited to work on something girly. I loved the simplicity of this embroidered butterfly. I thought that the subtle embroidery coloring was the perfect match for this dainty fabric.

You probably thought that I had quit sewing. Although I've been busy working full time, I have managed to squeeze in a few requested projects. This project included the full size tote, diaper clutch, ribbon blanket and changing pad. I had a hard time deciding on the lining and tie fabric for the tote but was pleased with the final project. This set was ordered by some co-workers who told me that Ainsley's mama loves pink. I hope there was enough pink for her liking.

This bag was made for my sister-in-law Ashlee. I asked her pick the fabrics so that it would be something that she would love. She did a great job picking these Michael Miller fabrics. The deep brown, blue and green look so good together. This bag has lots of places to keep Ashlee organized. There is an outer back pocket, two outer side pockets for bottles and two large pockets inside. I also made a coordinating pacifier clip and onesie.

I've tried to make clothes before. I've never been very successful. When I saw this pattern I decided to go against my judgement and give it a try. This particular dress is called a "pillowcase dress" and was very easy to make. The pattern can be purchased here. I added some embroidery to the bottom and made a headband ( free pattern here) and removable felt flower to match. This pattern can easily be adjusted to become a shirt. I can't wait to experiment with some different fabric combinations and lengths.

Versatile Placemat Purse

I decided to try something new with this latest placemat purse. I used the lining to make the top border. I lengthened the straps that hold the handles so they would also hold the ribbon in place. I included three different colors of ribbon so that G could change the color to coordinate with her outfit. I thought this would be a very versatile way to change your bag with your mood.

Back in November we had a baby shower for my sister-in-law Jessica. We were so busy with the preparations that I forgot to take pictures of the other things that I made her. But here is the center piece. I love using onesies to decorate at a baby shower. I thought that this embroidered zebra went perfectly with the "Wild Thing" theme. I also made a brown zebra print diaper clutch.

One very cool mom ordered this bag for her tween daughter. I knew this bag was screaming for some Twilight. The embroidery on the front says "Fanpire... I'm a Twilight Girl". Her name is embroidered on the reverse side. I won't show that picture because this is a Christmas gift. I don't want to spoil any surprises. So I added something new to this bag. Faith Hope and Don't you LOVE this

I was very excited when Joy picked this fabric. I had been showing it to lots of clients hoping that someone would select it. It is called Fleur Tattoo by Michael Miller. My only wish is that it said Amy across the top. As always it has 6 roomy pockets, a vinyl protective bottom and a key fob. I've also added some additional top stitching to help give it a more "finished" look.

This really is my favorite blanket of all time. It is hard to really say that because I have made quite a few. I used a super soft and cuddly brown fabric paired with a dinosaur print flannel. I then embroidered a dinosaur to match along with Emmett's name. The orange and brown must have been inspired by the season change.

This cute bag was ordered for a new mom that loves owls. It has a deep brown background and I choose orange as the accent color. I used orange for the embroidery, pockets and key fob tie. I also made a changing pad using the same owl fabric.

Well Kat was right. It was a tote bag (of course). I also made a diaper clutch to match. My orders for this bag were to make it not too fancy, so I had to leave the ribbon accent and embroidery off. But I still think that it turned out pretty nice. I'm loving the new Michael Miller fabric.

P.S. The black, white and red have put me in the mood for Twilight.

I know that a mother should never say that she has a favorite but this bag might make me break that rule. I loved the finished product. I have been showing this fabric to many clients, always hoping that someone would pick it and finally someone did. I used Michael Miller cotton Brown Carnival Blossom with Michael Miller Jet Brown on the outer bag and Michael Miller Breeze Vintage Dot for the lining. If a bag could have a personality I would say that it is playful and happy. I hope it's new owner feels the same way.

As with all my bags I added a magnetic closure, key fob and vinyl lining on the bottom.

I always tend to gravitate towards brown and green. This client gave me NO direction but simply said you pick everything. So it wasn't a huge surprise that these fabrics were the winners.

I received this comment about this bag and had to share:

"I ended up flying to MD last minute this past weekend & was able to give my granny her b-day gift myself this morning, & the bag you made was a ridiculous hit! Before I even gave it to her I saw a strange yellow bag with the old "Mason's Great Granny" cut out of her old (worn beyond recognition) bag & stapled to it because she loved it so much she wanted to continue using it as much she could. Little did I realize how perfect the timing was for the replacement bag! My grandma about DIED when she opened her present & saw the NEW bag - the colors were perfect, the plastic bottom was perfect - she adores the keychain holder & the snap - this is just PERFECT & she is in heaven. One of the reasons that I love doing this is getting new ideas and color combinations from clients that I wouldn't necessarily pick myself. Point in case is my newest JoJo. I've been wanting to use brown and white zebra for a while and finally found someone that appreciated it as much as I did. She picked teal as her accent color and it turned out so nice. The teal added the perfect pop or color.

For those that didn't get to see the placemat purses and apron from the Heather's raffle drawing here are a few pictures.

This bag says "If you'll be my Edward I'll be your Bella". I lined it with a black and white geometric fabric and added an interior pocket. The red ribbons are removable... but thought that they were so cute on this bag.

This bag is made of red corduroy with a black lining. It says "Fanpire I'm a Twilight Girl".

Unfortunately my full length picture of the apron didn't turn out... but I found this cute vintage style apron and added Bella's Kitchen to the front.

Thanks Heather for planning such a fun evening. It was fun designing a few Twilight inspired items.

I have been trying to play catch up for the past few weeks as I have gone back to work. Here are a few of the projects that I have finished. Hopefully I will be done in a few more weeks and ready to take on more orders. Thanks for being patient!

I know that most of my posts tell you how I love how projects turn out. But when I say that I love this bag.... it is true love. It is a new design that I will affectionately call the JoJo. It is a BIG bag that I am sure could truly fit everything you could possibly want to take, including the baby if need be. One of the fun things about this bag is that is doesn't resemble a traditional diaper bag. So for all you gals out there that don't need a diaper bag... this is for you. It is a sling style with two handles. You can tell from the second picture that the side of each handle is very wide and become narrow at the shoulder. There are three pockets inside. One medium and two deep, narrow pockets. This could easily be made into two pockets... one medium and one XL. For this particular bag I used corduroy for the top band and handles and cute Amy Butler fabric for the outside and lining.

I also experimented with a changing pad. I used a thin layer of vinyl over the decorative fabric and a striped chenille on the back with a ribbon tie. It also has fleece in the middle for some padding. I also tried a new shape for the bib. It is a bit smaller and shorter than the other bibs that I have made.

I had a request for the messenger bag but less bulky and less "diaper bag". So I made the messenger a bit smaller and thinner and left the outside side pocket off. I was really happy with the finished product. I thought that the size was perfect for an everyday bag and don't you love the Amy Butler fabric!

Crayon Roll

I made these the other day for my kids ages 3, 5 and 7, and they have loved them. They are the perfect travel case for crayons. I found the directions at Skip to my Lou . I made a few modifications including adding a Velcro closure instead of a ribbon. I wanted my kids who don't know how to tie a bow yet to still be able to open and close it easily. It holds 16 crayons and is approx 5" tall. I made one for my nephew yesterday and added his name on the outside. What a great gift for all those little artists.

New Bag..... as promised

Here is one of my new bags. It is a messenger style diaper bag. Although, with a few alterations could be used as an everything bag. The pictures show the front view, outer side pocket, inside view and back. This bag is approx. 14" wide x 12' tall x 5" deep with a 16" drop from shoulder to top of bag. This can be worn over your shoulder or with the strap across your body. Anyone taller than 5'5" may want to lengthen the strap if you want to carry it with the strap across your body.

The fabric I used was an experiment. I found a cotton laminate. It is your basic cotton with a thin clear vinyl coat on the top. That is why it looks very shiny in the picture. It is great for a diaper bag because you only need to wipe it with a damp cloth to clean. It is not machine washable. Although there are many positives about this fabric, it was very hard to work with because it can not be ironed on both sides. The creases from shipping were hard to get out. For this reason I'm not offering this fabric at this time..... OK maybe with lots of begging and pleading and an extra fee. :) I'll be making another one of these in the next few weeks using a regular cotton fabric... so look for pictures.

Here's what's new in my little sewing world:

My machine came back from vacation. She is working like a champ!

I've been working on a few projects that I'll post pictures of later. Some are gifts and I don't want to give away any surprises.

I have made a few NEW bags. As soon as I take the pictures I'll post them.

I ordered a book called "A is for Apron". It has the cutest vintage aprons you have ever seen. I am excited to give them a try.

I am already looking ahead to the Christmas rush. I am heading back to work full time and won't have as much time for sewing. :( So what that means for you is that you need to get any Christmas orders in ASAP. I will have to cut off orders after Nov. 15th and possibly sooner depending on how many I get. So start thinking ahead!

A Favorite Bridal Shower Gift

I've made several of these aprons for different bridal showers but don't think that I have posted them before. They have been in all different colors (pink and brown, blue and brown, pink and red etc) and loved the way this red and black turned out. My sister ordered this for a friend and put it together with a cute cook book.

My friend Bridget came to me with this idea for her newborn son's blessing day. She wanted a onesie that had a white tie embroidered on it. This was my version. I first tried it in white with off-white dots and then did her onesie in white on white. What a fun and original idea for a special day.

Black and White and Pink All Over

I loved experimenting with these colors. This customer gave me the color combinations but gave me free reign to create as I wanted. I thought that both sets turned out unique and girly. It is hard to pick a favorite. I loved the embroidery on the swirl set. The flower applique was the perfect touch. But I was so happy with the ruffle on the squares set. It softened the lines and made it girly. For the square blanket I used two cotton fabric layers to make it cooler for the summer. The swirl set used the super soft minkee dot on the back. And I can't forget the bag. I think I am in love... if it is possible to be in love with a bag. Hmmmm...... if only I had a little girl to make this set for.

Machine on Strike

My embroidery machine has informed me that it is going on strike for the month of August. Apparently there is a wonderful vacation spot calling her name at our local sewing machine repair shop.... :)

I have been ignoring the need to service my machine for quite a while and have decided that it has to be done! After 3,240,276 stitches I am tempting fate to go any further without a tune up. That means that I will be without it for 3-4 weeks. You are more than welcome send inquiries or questions about future orders, but please be aware that I won't be able to start them until the end of August and need about2 weeks to finish most projects.

You may be asking yourself what I am going to be doing with all my free time... I hope to go back into hobby mode and experiment with some new designs and fabrics. So look for posts of my new creations!

Blue Disco Dot Tote

I've been experimenting with some small design changes and have been really happy with the outcome. (Thanks Nicole for the inspiration!) Instead of having the small solid piece of fabric on the bottom I flipped things around and put it on the top. Then I added the embroidery to the top chocolate section. I loved how it left lots of dots but I was able to keep the focus on Taylor's name. The lining of this bag is chocolate with the blue dots at the pockets. I also used a super stiff and sturdy interfacing on the fabric. This bag totally stands on its own. So now there are two choices for interfacing... depending on how stiff you want your bag.

I also wanted to share with you a fun place to shop for fabric on the web. www.craftersvision.com has a excellent selection at a great price. I love the Michael Miller collection. His fabrics are so fun and versatile. He even has a laminated cotton available. It is regular cotton with a clear plastic laminate added to the front. I thought that it would be a great product to use for diaper bags that always seem to get dirty quickly. All you do is wipe with a damp cloth to clean. I will be playing with it soon, so watch for some new designs and fabric options.

BTW... this disco dot fabric also comes in pink and brown!

A friend ordered this for her sister's birthday. The swirl fabric was fun to experiment with. I'm working on a regular tote using the swirl that I'll be posting in a few days.

This bag is surprisingly roomy. I put three pockets and a key fob to help with organization.

Blue Stripes!

For this bag I used a cotton retro blue striped and dark brown fabrics with a stiff interfacing to give it lots of body. This, like all my other bags, had six roomy pockets inside, a magnetic snap closure, and a key fob to keep everything organized. I also lined the bottom of the bag with a clear vinyl to help keep things clean and for added strength.

This was really two sets in one. The palm tree design used the super soft blue dot minkee on the back of the blanket and bib. The surf board design used a double layer of the hibiscus for the blanket to make a cooler and more light weight summer blanket.

This is a hobo style roomy bag with 3 pockets, a magnetic snap closure and a key fob on the inside. The top yolk is approx 11" across and 4" tall. The body of the bag is 15" across at the bottom and 10" tall. There is even enough room in this bag for a couple diapers and travel wipes container.

Once again the picture doesn't do this bag justice. I really should take a photography class or something. I haven't done much with stripes before, but loved the colors and finished product. Again all of my full size totes are lined, with 6 roomy pockets for lots of storage.

Placemat Purse for Eva

I made this placemat purse for my Grandmother's birthday. Again, sorry about the poor picture quality... but I really liked the way that the lining and handles turned out. I used a faux suede placemat with a fun retro mum print fabric as the lining.

I loved this set using the pirate themed fabric. I used striped cream chenille on the back of the bib so it would be soft against babies skin. I'm sure that Lexington is a treasure.

It's been a long time since my last post. No, I haven't been on a much needed vacation, just busy with lots of small projects. One of my projects was monograming pillowcases and towels. I thought they turned out great and would make a nice gift.

I've added a few things to this bag that I haven't before. First, I thought that the bow would really add to this design and be perfect for a diaper bag. I also added a ribbon tie at the top. I can now offer a few choices for closures including : ribbon, Velcro, or a magnet snap.

Funky Flowers

Can't help but love this funky flower burp cloth and bib. The appliqued flower on the burp cloth used the same cream striped chenille as the back of the bib.

This has been a wonderful and busy Christmas season. I hope that you have enjoyed family, friends and good food as we have. I'm sure that I am leaving out some of my projects from the past month, but I've lost track. From what I can remember since November I've made around 20 placemat purses, 8 totes, 4 draw string backpacks, embroidered names on 6 throws, one baby set... and the list goes on and on. Thank you to all that have trusted me in creating that perfect gift. This is something that I love and hope that you love the finished product. My Favorite Color Is Light Tan

OK, my favorite color isn't really light tan... but I couldn't help but include a Nacho quote. I don't claim to take great pictures and this one proves it, but I loved this bag and wanted to include it in the blog. It's hard to tell but the leaf embroidery goes along both sides as well as across the top and it has tiny pearls places throughout the embroidery. I used bamboo and rope handles tied, of course, with ribbon bows.

Yep, it's a corduroy placemat purse. I used dark brown wood handles with inlaid beading and brown ribbon bows to add a bit a pizazz. Most purses measure 7.5" H x 13 x W x 3" deep.
